Make your own deodorant

If your skin gets a rash from mass produced chemical deodorants, you can make your own and reduce the risk of allergic reaction.

Deodorants can contain aluminium and other chemicals, so it is not surprising that people are looking for alternatives to the commercial brands. Coconut oil and other natural products are becoming popular bases for home-made deodorants due to their gentle impact on the skin.

Here are a couple of recipes using shea butter and coconut oil to help you make your own deodorant.

Coconut oil deodorant

  • 6 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup bicarb soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot or organic cornstarch
  • Essential oils (optional)

  1. Mix bicarb soda and arrowroot together in a medium sized bowl
  2. Mash in coconut oil with a fork until well mixed
  3. Add oils if desired (for aroma)
  4. Store in small glass jar or old deodorant container for easy use

Shea butter deodorant

  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons bicarb soda
  • 2 tablespoons Shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot (optional) or organic cornstarch
  • Essential oils (optional for aroma)

  1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil in a saucepan over medium heat until barely melted. An alternate way to melt the butter and oil is to combine in a small glass mason jar with a lid and place this in a small saucepan of water until melted.
  2. Remove from heat and add bicarb soda and arrowroot (If you don’t have arrowroot, use more bicarb soda or just omit)
  3. Mix well
  4. Add essential oils and pour into a glass container for storage. It does not need to be stored in the fridge.
  5. If you prefer, you can let it cool completely and put into an old deodorant stick for easier use, though it may melt in the summer.
