Take a detour from the Gibb River Road to see Mitchell Plateau and Mitchell Falls. See how the vegetation changes from dry scrub to lush rainforest full of Livistona palm forests, as you drive away from the Gibb River Road.
To see Mitchell Falls, you can either walk to view the four waterfalls or take a helicopter tour for a unique overhead view. If you walk, you’ll pass a variety of smaller falls.
First up: Little Mertens Falls, a 10m waterfall cascading into a scenic pool. Enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural spa pools above the falls. There’s also a cave beneath the falls that explorers will want to check out.
Next, you’ll come to Big Mertens Falls, much larger than Little Mertens (as the name implies). This waterfall is 60m high and very dramatic.
You’ll hear the thunder of Mitchell Falls before you see them. Mitchell Falls is a series of four waterfalls, each spilling into a clear pool of water. Unfortunately, swimming is not allowed here, as it’s both a sacred place and saltwater crocodile territory (swimming anywhere above Mitchell Falls is safe, however).
If you’d like to combine a helicopter tour with a hike, there is the option to be either picked up or dropped off by helicopter at Mitchell Falls, saving you half the walk.
