On the east coast of Tasmania, just a two-and-a-half hour drive from Hobart, is Wineglass Bay – a location with coastal scenery like no other. Home to what’s been voted one of the best beaches in the world, it features white sand and year-round sparkling clear water.
Located on the Freycinet Peninsular, there’s much to see and explore, including a range of outdoor activities such as bushwalking, fishing and boating, sea kayaking, surfing, rock climbing, four-wheel-drive tours and much more.
Nowhere else in Australia can you see pink granite mountains rising straight from the sea to create sheltered waterways.
There are a number of beautiful walks, ranging from short strolls to overnight trips. At sunrise, take the 500m Cape Tourville circuit, which offers sweeping views of the Freycinet Peninsula and Wineglass Bay. For the best view of Wineglass Bay, you can’t beat the Wineglass Bay Lookout Walk, a two-hour return hike. It’s a short but steep climb to the saddle between two peaks.
If you really want to stretch your legs, try the Hazards Beach walk, a six-hour return trip. This walk will take you along the length of Wineglass Bay before crossing the isthmus to Hazards Beach. You’ll be following in the footsteps of the Aboriginal people who once lived in the area.
Accommodation in the area caters for everyone, with plenty of camping options through to luxury suites at environmental resorts and everything in between. Whatever your idea of a good getaway, this region will likely have it.
