A guide to the Gold Coast hinterland

There’s more to the Gold Coast than high-rises and endless beaches.

Take a break from the glitter strip and enjoy a bit of nature in the hinterland.

Visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to adventures in the hinterland. Keen walkers have a plethora of trails from which to choose. Lamington National Park has 160km of graded walking paths and 100km of trails. Or head to Springbrook National Park to play in waterfalls.

If you’re up for a challenge, the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk stretches 54km through Lamington and Springbrook, via the Numinbah Valley. As you travel through this World Heritage Area, you’ll move from subtropical rainforest to warm temperate rainforest to cool temperate rainforest.

If you’d rather just relax, head to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. With limited mobile reception and no TVs in the rooms, you’re guaranteed a digital detox. The Lost World day spa offers treatments like massages and facials for the ultimate way to unwind.

Eat and drink

Wine lovers should check out Canungra Valley Vineyard or Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard and Winery. If you’d rather not worry about driving, the Mount Tamborine Wine Tasting Tour is perfect. They’ll pick you up from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, then take you around to the best wineries for tastings, along with craft beers, cheeses and fudge.

The Old Church in Mount Tamborine is a lovely wedding venue, but also has a fantastic restaurant. The beautiful country views from the verandah are a treat and you’re sure to love Chef Andrew Quarantini’s local fare.
