Teach your child good oral hygiene

Healthy teeth makes for healthy children, so getting your kids into good oral hygiene habits is well worthwhile and may save you some money too.

It’s never too early to start educating your children on oral hygiene. One of the best ways to start the learning process is to set a good example yourself. Let your kids see you cleaning your teeth every morning and night.

Teach the basics:

  • Brush twice a day.
  • Floss every day.
  • Avoid starchy and sugary foods as much as possible.
  • Visit a dentist regularly for checkups.

Get your kids to enjoy brushing their teeth by making it fun. Clean your teeth with them and make a game of it. Don’t make it a first to finish game, as you want to get your kids into the habit of taking their time to clean all their teeth properly. Get them to use the mirror to track their brushing so they clean all their teeth. Remember to teach them not to swallow the toothpaste, but to spit it all out when they finish brushing.

Get a toothbrush with their favourite cartoon character or superhero on it. Even offer an incentive or reward for cleaning and flossing on time. Just make sure the rewards aren’t chocolate or sugary treats.

You’ll also need to find a child-friendly dentist, one your kids enjoy visiting. If your kid’s first experiences at the dentist are not enjoyable, you’ll make it very difficult to get them into the habit of regular check-ups.
