Chocolate peanut butter balls

The salty crunch of peanut butter can be the perfect partner to the sweet taste of chocolate.

Combine these two into a delicious dessert, which is great thrown into a lunchbox as a treat or as an accompaniment to a good movie.

To make your own chocolate peanut butter balls you will need 2 cups of smooth peanut butter, 1 cup of softened butter, 5 cups of icing sugar, 4 to 5 tablespoons of vegetable shortening and 2 packets of chocolate chips (about 700 g worth).

Combine the butter and peanut butter in a medium-sized bowl and stir them with a wooden spoon until evenly blended. Add the sugar and stir until the mixture has a sticky consistency.

Melt the chocolate chips with the vegetable shortening. This can be done in the microwave or in a bowl over a saucepan of boiling water. While the chocolate melts, roll the peanut butter mixture into balls about 4 cm wide and place them on a baking sheet.

Put the baking sheet with the peanut butter in the freezer until the balls are solid enough to pick up with a toothpick. This should take about 5 to 10 minutes.

Insert a toothpick into each ball and dip it into the melted chocolate. Set these balls on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and remove the toothpicks. Cool the peanut butter balls in the fridge until the chocolate has hardened, which will take about 5 minutes.
