Cat Cuddle Café is the cat’s meow

You’ll get more than a cup of tea and a slice of cake with a visit to the Cat Cuddle Café on Musgrave Road at Red Hill.

Established by Katina Balson in 2015, the café is a place where you can cuddle and play with up to 15 cats and help fund cat rescue.

Katina’s Pussies Galore Rescue is a Brisbane-based band of cat lovers dedicated to saving the lives of local unwanted cats. Some are abandoned by their owners, others surrendered and the luckiest have been rescued from death row in council pounds.

Visitors to the Cat Cuddle Café can pre-book a one-hour session with the cats online or just pop in and enjoy the upstairs café where they serve hot chocolate and barista-made cattaccinos, kitty lattes, short black cat coffee made with organic, free trade coffee from Prestige Organic Coffee. Enjoy your coffee at one of the upstairs tables or take it downstairs while you pat the cats.

“If you want to bring your cake down you’ll need to guard it from the pussies who have a sweet tooth,” Katina said.

The café’s food, which includes delicious cakes, muffins, quiches and other savoury options, is vegetarian, along with some vegan offerings.

The shelves are stocked array of cat-themed items, from bags and t-shirts to tiny cat figurines. Importantly, proceeds from sales go toward saving the lives of rescue animals.

A space at the rear of the building is filled with flowers and floral artistry, while next door houses the Animal Rescue Support Network Op-Shop overflowing with fabulous finds.

A one-hour session with the resident cats can include plenty of cuddles and snuggles or a rollicking romp with a bunch of curious kittens. There’s an ever-changing parade of cats, as most are up for adoption. It’s a challenge to arrive for a coffee and not leave with a cat, provided you can satisfy the stringent criteria. They want to make sure their charges go to the right homes.

“We wanted to create a lovely space for people to interact with cats and to feel part of something wonderful,” Katina said.

“A place where the term ‘Crazy Cat Person’ is a badge of honour.”

The café’s fundraising efforts include themed, two-hour Thursday night sessions where visitors play board games, relax with yoga, origami and knitting, which is popular with the cats who love the yarn. Donations and volunteers are always welcome at the café.

The Cat Cuddle Cafe is located at 160 Musgrave Rd, Red Hill, Brisbane. Phone (07) 3189 2426 or visit the website.

The café is open daily (except Monday) from 10am to 6pm.
