Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May 2016
Mt Barney is a giant of a mountain standing at 1354m hight and has inspired operators who are hosting A World Apart festival to offer giant outdoor games, including all the old favourites like tic-tac-toe, pickup sticks, chess and marbles.
Mt Barney is the dramatic and easily-recognisable peak that is constantly seen while driving around A World Apart, and it is part of the McPherson Range of mountains within the Scenic Rim.
A World Apart is annual event in the Mt Barney Valley that has been held for the last nine years. It was originally designed as a day trip to entice people out for a day drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, but has turned into a weekend affair as past guests who are ‘in the know’ base themselves at Mt Barney to enjoy all that is on offer at their leisure, without the need to hurry home after a glass of wine at sunset.
This part of the Scenic Rim still has a myriad of country roads, one lane bridges and even dirt roads that tempt the weekend driver to explore just over the next hill or around the next corner. Discoveries are pot luck, but very rewarding for that occasional time when a fabulous destination turns up like a lucky penny. Google Maps technology isn’t quite reliable when you add together country destinations and mountains, so on the A World Apart weekend you will find the help of colourful wooden signposts at each intersection to guide you along your discovery drive.
The beautiful Scenic Rim is only 90 minutes drive south of Brisbane and Nerang on the Gold Coast. The operators are unique in working together for this annual event to help you explore the beautiful Mt Barney Valley. Each location offers a free ‘taste of Mt Barney’ with local and homemade fare – Barney Creek Vineyard will have wine tastings of their own wines.
Mt Barney Lodge is an Advanced Ecotourism retreat and will have hourly bushtucker tours including a tasting of how this bushtucker can be used in everyday food. Pietro’s Pizza displays modern stone sculptures within their gardenscape that can be contemplated as long as the samples of homemade fruit sorbet lasts! Scenic Rim Hampers will have samples of the locally sourced indulgences that are within their hand-assembled hampers. Ridgeline Studios is joining in for the first time this year, and will have blacksmithing and watercolour art to appreciate.
Guests to A World Apart will also be able to explore the unique gardens at the five venues, enjoy live music, and discover the art from local artists such as Therese Flynn-Clark – a fibre and weaving artist who has won the Caldera Art Prize, and Jennifer Seale who creates magical canvasses of landscapes and still life with watercolours.
So if you need a giant reason to visit Mt Barney and all that is on offer, this is it.
